Rochford Reserve 'Dans les Bois' Chardonnay 2015
Absolutely delicious!

Dans les Bois translates to 'in the woods' referring to bushland at the base of this vineyard site.

Austere, some minerality, nutty, butter cream. The wine spent ten months on lees in French oak (30% new). Some malo peeks through. The generous delivery and beautiful balance cannot be denied. Finishing with great length and persistence, I'd happily go back time and time again.

Will cellar eight to ten years but drinking well now.

Very good+

Top 5 Star Winery in the James Halliday’s Wine Companion 2015

Rochford Wine scores for the James Halliday’s Wine Companion 2015 Edition were released on 29 July 2015 with outstanding results and our best ever overall rating with a Top 5 Star Winery status. This rating means “Outstanding winery regularly producing wines of a exemplary quality and typicity. Will have at least two wines rated at 94 points or above, and had a five-star rating for the previous two years”.

Seven of our wines reviewed scored 94 points and over, placing them in the “Outstanding” category for “Wines of the highest quality, often with a distinguished pedigree”.

The full list of scores and reviews is below with links to purchase when wine is available.

96 Points – 2013 ‘L Enfant Unique’ Pinot Noir
“An ambitious approach, but has worked very well indeed, the bouquet perfumed, silken tannins woven through the intense red and black cherry fruit; a long and satisfying finish and aftertaste”.

95 Points - Rochford 2012 Isabella's Vineyard Yarra Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
“An extremely attractive wine with a limitless supply of cassis fruit, the only quibble the amount of new oak apparent at this early stage. It is quite certain the oak will settle down with a few more years in bottle.”

95 Points - Rochford 2013 Yarra Valley Pinot Noir
“Very good colour; richer than L'Enfant Unique, with a certain amount of plum joining with the cherry fruit; more patience may see the wine gain the finesse and complexity of L'Enfant with 5+ years bottle age.”

95 Points - Rochford 2012 Isabella's Vineyard Yarra Valley Chardonnay
“From a single estate block, wild yeast barrel-fermented and matured…This is the most generous and richly flavoured of the Rochford '12 Chardonnays, its point of difference coming from the vineyard, not the vinification, other than wild yeast fermentation. It provides flavour with finesse, length with balance, the overall flavour profile and structure in the heartland of Yarra chardonnay.”

95 Points - Rochford 2012 Heathcote Syrah
“The red berry fruits of the bouquet have spice and bramble overtones, translating into the mouth-watering complexity of the medium-bodied palate, complexity compounded by the fine, gently savoury and persistent tannins.”

94 Points - Rochford 2012 ‘la Gauche’ Yarra Valley Cabernet
“An 85/13/2% blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc, hence the reference to the Left Bank of Bordeaux. Estate-grown, hand-picked fruit…but notwithstanding the merlot contribution, and significantly higher alcohol, this wine has a more savoury character than Isabella's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon; however, there is sufficient elegance and persistence to balance those savoury characters.”

94 Points - Rochford 2012 Yarra Valley Syrah
“Estate-grown and hand-picked, all but 10% of the bunches were destemmed for a wild yeast fermentation. Bright colour; here the red fruit flavours are direct, with markedly less whole bunch character than its Heathcote sibling; red cherry and a faint touch of eucalypt drive the bouquet and medium-bodied palate; the finish is long and even, the tannins fine and supple.”

93 Points - Rochford 2012 Yarra Valley Chardonnay
“Here there is drive and energy to the wine, with a nice balance between white peach and grapefruit flavours, the French oak well balanced and integrated.”

93 Points - Rochford 2012 ‘la Droite’ Yarra Valley Merlot Cabernet
“A 65/20/15% blend of merlot, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon, hence the oblique reference to the Right Bank of Bordeaux. The juicy red berry fruit flavours have contrasting savoury tannins on the back-palate and finish - it is a contrast that works well.”

92 Points - Rochford 2012 Yarra Valley Pinot Gris
SOLD OUT – 2013 Vintage released September 2014
“Wild yeast fermentation of cloudy juice followed by six months on lees has worked very well, adding grip and texture to the pear, apple and spice flavours; good acidity.”

92 Points - Rochford 2010 Macedon Ranges Blanc de Blanc
“Spent 3 years on lees, disgorged Sept '13. Still very pale in colour, and is correspondingly delicate and fresh; the flavours are almost entirely in a citrus/grapefruit groove, and the dosage has been well balanced, leaving the finish crisp and dry.”

91 Points - Rochford 2012 Yarra Valley Cabernet Franc
“Speaks clearly of its variety, which may or may not be a good thing depending on one's viewpoint; there are leafy/tobacco notes to the palate, which has a savoury, green olive (as opposed to black olive) finish.”

2012 Isabella's Vineyard
Yarra Valley Chardonnay

I recall visiting Rochford and getting stuck into some just-shucked oysters, and the visage comes back when I try this wine – sure, it’s got the en-vogue struck-match funk, but there’s a stream of trim, tight, citrus and green fruit flavour that would work so well with seafood. 13.3%

2012 Rochford Yarra Valley Chardonnay
Posted on 10 June 2014 By Gary Walsh

Not met too many 2012 Yarra Valley Chardonnays I’ve not liked. White peach, grapefruit, ginger, cinnamon and cedar. Medium bodied with a cool feeling but good amount of flavour – pear, grapefruit and spice – some chalkiness to the texure and a spice laden citrus finish. Juicy and approachable, yet complex.

“5 Star rating”

Outstanding Category (94-100 points)

2011 Isabella Vineyard Chardonnay
“From Rochford’s 30-year-old, steeply sloping vineyard on Briarty Road, wild yeast barrel fermented in French oak (25% new), matured in those barrels for 12 months, then a further 6 months in tank. A very elegant wine, with perfectly ripened varietal fruit, and the length for which the best Yarra Valley chardonnays are known.” - 95 Points

2011 Yarra Valley Chardonnay
“Bright, gleaming straw-green; grown on Isabella’s Vineyard, and made in a similar fashion except for no new oak, and 3 months in tank after 12 months in barrel. It has precision, focus and drive to its mix of grapefruit and white peach flavours, crisp acidity lengthening the palate and finish.” - 94 Points

2010 Yarra Valley ‘La Droite’
“La Droite is the right bank and the 50/50% blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot is a convincing evocation of the style of that part of Bordeaux. These varieties, especially the Cabernet Franc are often treated as poor cousins in the Yarra Valley, but this medium bodied wine has both elegance and intensity to its red and black fruits ensconced in a web of fine, savoury tannins.” - 94 Points

24 November 2010
“Rochford Pinot Gris 2009 $28–$33 Macedon, Victoria The hot, dry 2009 vintage kept pinot gris yields in Rochford’s Macedon vineyard to less than 2.5 tonnes per hectare. This partly explains the richness of fruit flavour that, in combination with great textural richness, gives an impression of sweetness. Yet the wine carries a barely-detectable five grams a litre of residual sugar. This is true, cool-grown pinot gris – with a light rinse of bronze-pink colour, clear varietal flavour, silky, slightly oily texture and very fresh, lively acidity.”

17 November 2010
“Rochford Sebastian’s Paddock Pinot Noir 2008 $54–$60 Macedon Ranges, Victoria Rochford is a Yarra based maker with 24 hectares of vines near Lansfield, in the Macedon Ranges, and 14 hectares in the Yarra (before its recent purchase of the Briarty Hill vineyard). The wine reveals a wide spectrum of pinot aromas and flavours, from ripe, red berries to a slight stalkiness to earthy and savoury notes. The palate’s generous and complex and showing the assertive, firm tannins of the hot 2008 vintage.”
